fter a brief period of peace, escalators are once again trying to devour Chinese children with one poor kid in Hunan province nearly losing an arm to one machine.
On Sunday, at a shopping mall in the city of Yongzhou, a 1-year-old child’s right arm got caught in an escalator. Fortunately, the escalator was stopped almost immediately. In video from the scene, a frantic woman can be seen holding onto the child, waiting for rescuers to arrive.
After being freed from the escalator’s grasp, the child was rushed to the hospital, where doctors found that the arm had just barely escaped being mangled and ripped off by the escalator. The infant is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital’s ICU.
It’s not clear how the kid’s arm came to be trapped in the escalator.
China’s terrifying “escalator epidemic” began in June 2015 when a mother and her son were traveling up an escalator inside a Hubei shopping mall. At the top, a metal plate suddenly gave in beneath them. The mom just managed to push her young son to safety before being sucked into the machinery and killed.
Following that high-profile incident, more and more escalator accidents began making national news with an alarming number of children being seriously injured or killed when playing unattended near escalators, a series of tragedies that horrified the country.
Escalator accidents have tapered off in the last few years, but, every now and again, the machines try to eat another child.
