n the afternoon of July 23rd, a toll station worker in Shandong’s Dezhou city went above and beyond the call of duty, helping to rescue a kidnapping victim after his kidnappers tried to pass by his booth in a grey van.
Surveillance video footage shows the worker processing the driver’s payment when a muffled voice from the back of the van suddenly cries out, “Help me!” The worker quickly inquires about what’s going on in the back, demanding that the driver roll down the backseat window. The driver’s uneasy manner makes it obvious that something illegal is going on, causing the worker to immediately rush out of his booth while shouting “call the police!”
Upon hearing this, the driver makes a run for it, leaving his fellow kidnapper behind in the van. The worker brandishes a mop and moves a large extinguisher to block the van from leaving. The kidnapper comes out and argues with the worker while holding a stick. He doesn’t attack the worker, instead using the stick to beat the victim in the back of the van.
Minutes later, police arrive at the scene and arrest the two kidnappers. They found the victim lying half-naked in the back of the van, with a bloody nose and bruises all over his body. It’s not clear why he was abducted.
On Weibo, many Chinese netizens wrote that they were touched by the worker’s heroic act, noting the danger he had put himself in to save another human being.
