ales in China have been known to get a bit out of hand, but when the product that is on sale is Moutai, that’s when things can get really dangerous.
On Monday morning, police in the Hunan capital of Changsha were alerted to a developing situation at a local Moutai dealer that was offering big discounts. When they arrived, police found more than 400 people gathered around the shop in a near frenzy.
Police tried their best to calm things down, ordering customers to evacuate the area to prevent a stampede. However, their orders went unheeded and unheard. Finally, one officer decided that enough was enough and fired a warning shot into the air. That moment was captured on video.
In case you are not familiar, Moutai is China’s most popular and celebrated baijiu. Based in a small town in Guizhou province, it is also the world’s most valuable liquor company with its market value equal to half the GDP of its home province. While the company was hit hard by Xi Jinping’s corruption crackdown, its product still has quite the following among the laobaixing.
