man has been arrested after killing 11 people and injuring 44 others on Wednesday night at a crowded public square in Hengdong county, Hunan province.
The 54-year-old man named Yang Zanyun drove his SUV into the crowd of people before exiting his vehicle and going on a stabbing spree with a knife and shovel.
Local police say that Yang was intent on “getting revenge on society,” noting that he had served a total of 10 years in prison on convictions including robbery, drug trafficking, and arson. Other reports say that Yang is also suffering from gastric cancer and coronary heart disease.
At around 7:40 pm yesterday night, the square was populated by dozens of locals who were going on evening walks or dancing in groups. Overnight, grisly photos emerged online of the bloody aftermath on the square, showing people lying on the ground in pools of blood.
