Footage of the tragic and curious incident first appeared on Chinese social media last Friday. In the video, a younger man and an older man are seen waiting together for an elevator. After a bit, the younger man uses a key to open the elevator doors and peek inside. Apparently believing that the elevator had arrived, the elderly man steps up and falls into the open shaft.
It turns out that the incident actually occurred on September 24th in Guizhou’s Cengong county. The younger man in the video, surnamed Zhou, told reporters that his father-in-law was visiting at the time for the Mid-Autumn Festival and said that he also wanted to go and see other relatives living in the area.
It just so happened that Zhou worked as an electrician at the building where some of these relatives lived. As he and his father-in-law were waiting for the lift, Zhou says that he noticed a problem with the display panel and decided to unlock the elevator doors in order to investigate the issue, not realizing that his father-in-law would try to walk in.
After watching the footage, many netizens voiced their suspicions that Zhou had intentionally murdered his father-in-law, a charge that Zhou has sharply denied, saying that he had a good relationship with the old man. “I can no longer eat. I have no appetite,” he told reporters. “I did not intend to hurt my father-in-law.”
