wealthy father has found himself ensconced in some serious middle school drama after fellow parents raised a fuss about him dropping his kid off at school in a fancy sports car.
The father, surnamed Li, is a big shot at a real estate development company in Hangzhou, earning more than 4 million yuan a year, reports the Chutian Metropolis Daily. With his money, he bought a Ferrari 488, which he uses to take his son to middle school.
Screenshots that have been posted online from a WeChat group of middle school parents show the child’s teacher writing that some parents had voiced their complaints to her about Li’s choice of ride, worrying that it may create harmful “class divisions” in the classroom among the students.
Other parents then also started to speak up, accusing Li of “flaunting” his wealth and recommending that he simply buy a more modest car for the purpose of dropping his kid off at school.
However, Li refused to back down, declaring that he had worked hard for his money and wasn’t about to buy another car just to satisfy their demands. “What’s wrong with wanting to provide the very best for my child?” he wrote. “If seeing someone else driving a sports car hurts your children’s feelings, then they are too sensitive.”
After this comment, Li was ejected from the WeChat with his last message, “Are you all crazy?” bouncing back.
The screenshots have created a stir on Chinese social media with most netizens calling the parents’ and teacher’s demand unreasonable and absurd. “Obviously, it’s not the kids that are jealous of the sports car, but the parents,” wrote one Weibo user. “Wealth disparity is a fact of life, it’s best that the children just learn to deal with now,” added another.
