n extremely appalling story has come out of Guangdong province, involving a dissatisfied father stealing his own newborn daughter from the hospital and throwing her off a cliff.
On the morning of October 26th, a health center in Magui township called the police after finding that one of the newborns under its care had disappeared. Upon investigation, officers noticed that the infant’s father, surnamed Li, was acting suspiciously. Eventually, he told them, frankly, that at 1 am that morning, he had stuffed his baby girl into a snakeskin bag, sneaked her out of the hospital, and flung her off a remote cliff outside of town, according to a local news report.
Led by Li, police arrived at the area where the infant had been tossed into the wilderness at around 11 am. Immediately, they began to search the steep cliff for the child with local volunteers also joining in the search after news spread about what had happened.
Just as the rescuers began to worry that they were too late to save the baby, they heard an infant’s faint cry. Following the sound and hurrying through the thick brush, they were able to find the child at about 1 pm.
The newborn was discovered 30 meters down from the cliff’s edge, surviving the fall by landing in some thick, soft vegetation and then making it through the cold night thanks to being wrapped in a blanket and the snakeskin bag.
As for why a father would throw his healthy baby girl off a cliff, Li admitted that it was because of the traditional Chinese preference for boys over girls (重男轻女), explaining that he already had two girls and one boy, and was hoping to raise another boy.
Li has been detained by police and the baby girl is now safe with her mother.
