plunged into the Yangtze River on Sunday.ecurity footage has revealed the reason why a bus carrying 15 people swerved into oncoming traffic and
The video, recovered from the bus’s black box, shows a female passenger arguing with the bus driver and smacking him in the head with her cell phone as they cross over a bridge in the city of Chongqing. The driver responds with a blow of his own and then grapples with the woman briefly before suddenly sharply turning the wheel to the left, causing the bus to crash into oncoming traffic, smash through a wall, and fall into the Yangzte as passengers scream in terror.
According to police, the female passenger, identified as a 48-year-old woman surnamed Liu, was angry about having missed her stop and wanted the driver, surnamed Ran, to stop immediately to let her out, however, the driver refused to do so.
While much of the online rage has been directed at the female passenger, many Chinese netizens have also questioned the actions of the driver, pointing out that he doesn’t appear to “lose control of the vehicle,” as the police account of the incident describes, but instead seems to deliberately turn the wheel sharply to the left and doesn’t appear to try to brake or avoid the crash. Some have called the driver “suicidal.”
Police have said that there were15 people on board the bus at the time. So far, 13 bodies have been recovered. On Wednesday night, the wreckage of the bus itself was lifted from the river.
