hile some young people in China may celebrate Halloween, many in the older generation still frown upon the strange custom, others even curse at it.
Cell phone footage has been making waves on Chinese social media, showing an argument on the Qingdao subway between an angry uncle and a group people dressed up in costumes on Halloween night.
“Do you know that just by looking at you, I can tell that you are a prostitute?” the uncle says to one young woman who responds by telling them that he is making China “lose face” with his uncivilized behavior.
Undeterred, the uncle rants on. “You don’t look like a woman or a man!” he shouts. “What’s the difference between you and a prostitute?”
When the woman asks the uncle what business it is of his, he responds by telling her that it is his business because he is Chinese. “Are you Chinese? Fucking look at yourselves… You don’t look like humans or monsters! You are China’s shame!”
It’s not clear from the video what costumes the woman and her friends are wearing and how closely they actually resemble prostitutes. However, on Weibo, most netizens have generally agreed with the uncle’s assessment, arguing that while his language may have been a tad harsh, Halloween costumes should not be worn on public transport.
“The uncle said it right! Our young people shouldn’t be celebrating these trashy foreign holidays,” wrote one Weibo user.
