t least 15 people were killed and dozens more injured on Saturday evening when a truck lost control and crashed into a line of vehicles waiting outside of an expressway toll station near the Gansu capital of Lanzhou.
A total of 31 vehicles were reportedly involved in the massive pile-up. On Sunday morning, local government officials said that 10 of the 44 people injured in the crash are in serious condition.
Police have blamed the tragedy on the truck driver, who survived the crash, explaining that he had not driven on the expressway before and had braked continuously during a downhill section of the road, leading to his brakes failing. Instead of steering away, the driver crashed into the waiting cars.
This comes just one week after a bus in Chongqing plunged off a bridge and into the Yangtze River. Surveillance footage from inside the bus released on Friday shows that the crash was caused by a fight between the driver and a female passenger who had missed her stop.
Local officials have said that there 15 people on board the bus at the time of the crash. So far, 13 bodies have been recovered from the water.
