stranded in Siberia, confined there to their hotel and a British pub downstairs, 282 unlucky travelers have finally made it to their original destination of Shanghai.fter spending three days
The travelers left Paris on an Air France flight on Saturday, expecting to arrive in Shanghai the following day. Instead, the plane was forced to make an unexpected landing in the Siberian city of Irkutsk after light smoke and an “acrid” smell filled the cabin. None of the passengers were hurt and all were provided with rooms in a hotel near to the airport for the night.
But their travel nightmare did not end there. Early on Monday, passengers boarded another Air France plane which had been sent from Paris to take them the rest of the way to Shanghai. However, they were soon forced to disembark following a problem with the aircraft’s hydraulic system apparently caused by the cold weather.
The travelers were then sent back to their hotel. According to the Siberian Times, because they did not have Russian visas, they were all prevented from leaving the hotel and could only while away the time at the hotel’s London pub.
Due to their lack of visas, the passengers were also not allowed to book another flight or take their luggage, meaning that they were forced to stay in the same clothes for three days in a row. To make things worse, they arrived just as the first winter frosts fell and temperatures dropped to -20C and below at night. Having expected to instead be landing in Shanghai, they were obviously not dressed for the weather.
Still, most travelers tried to make the best of the situation, including a team of Louis Vuitton employees who documented their stay in Siberia on social media.
With two planes out of commission, Air France was forced to send yet another Boeing 777. Fortunately, this one took off from Irkutsk without any problems and landed in Shanghai on Wednesday afternoon.
