In a truly momentous day for wannabe Bond villains everywhere, a long-awaited, ultra-extravagant hotel built inside of an abandoned quarry in Shanghai’s southwestern Songjiang district has finally opened to guests.
The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland has been under construction for the last six years or so. Built against one side of an 88-meter-deep quarry, the hotel boasts 336 rooms over 19 floors, two of which are underwater with aquarium views.
The hotel is part of a $288 million development which will also include a theme park. Guests will also be able to enjoy water sports on the lake and rock climb or bungee jump off the surrounding cliffs. Already, there is a majestic waterfall roaring down one side of the quarry.
Below, you can watch a quick video tour of the hotel from AFP where they talk with some of the engineers who made this ambitious project a reality:

Pretty rad, huh? Though, if you want to stay here, be forewarned that it’s gonna cost you a pretty penny. At the moment, rooms appear to be sold out through November and December. In January, they start at around 3,500 yuan a night ($500).
