even people have been arrested after pulling off a daring caper of the largest meteorite to ever land in the southwestern region of Guangxi.
The 2-ton meteorite had been cemented into the ground in a pavilion in the remote village of Beilai. At 120-cm-long and 65-cm in diameter, the space rock was the village’s most prized possession, residing there for hundreds of years.
However, on January 27th, villagers found that the meteorite had somehow disappeared. Quickly, a manhunt was launched with a 10,000 yuan ($1,482) reward being offered up for information leading to the rock’s safe return.
Three days later, local police managed to track down the alleged culprits, arresting seven people and retrieving the meteorite. Authorities have promised to keep better watch on the rock in the future.
It’s not clear how much this massive meteorite is worth, however, in the past, even small scraps of meteorite have been known to sell for big money in China. Last year, thousands of treasure hunters descended upon Menghai county in Yunnan province after a large meteorite was spotted falling to the ground.
Later, one piece weighing just 20 grams was said to have been sold for 24,000 yuan ($3,700).
