assenger planes landed at the newly-built Beijing Daxing International Airport on Monday in a flight test preparing the mega-airport for its opening later this year.
Construction on the $11.5 billion airport is set to wrap up on June 30th with the place then opening to travelers on September 30th. With four runways and one of the world’s largest terminal buildings, the airport is slated to handle 45 million passengers a year by 2021, helping to relieve the pressure on the Beijing Capital International Airport, currently the world’s second busiest airport and also the one that suffers the most delays.
Located, 40 kilometers south of Beijing, the terminal building was designed by Zaha Hadid, an Iraqi-born British architect who died in 2016. Its design, which features five graceful limbs extending out of a central core, has received international acclaim, though netizens couldn’t help but notice that part of the terminal’s interior does look a lot like a vagina.
