n Tuesday, a foreign family decided to pay a visit to Hangzhou’s famous West Lake, only to end up becoming the tourist attraction themselves.
As seen in footage shared by Pear Video (which decided to blur out the faces of some of the Chinese tourists, but not the foreign family), the six foreigners — a man, two women, and three kids — were sitting down and resting on a bench near the scenic lake when they were swarmed by a large number of curious passersby who snapped photos of them and posed for pictures beside them with some even holding the family’s children.
It is readily apparent that the foreign family doesn’t enjoy being the center of attention, responding to the photo-takers with awkward smiles and attempts to ignore them.
In the footage, one Chinese tourist sitting nearby expresses his disgust with his fellow travelers’ “inappropriate” behavior, saying that the foreign family had only come to West Lake to have some fun, not to be photographed.
Catching sight of a real live foreigner is still a rarity for many in China and most people who have visited the country can tell similar tales about feeling like a minor celebrity because of their appearance, though rarely to this insane extent, providing yet more evidence as to why you should never go anywhere on Golden Week, particularly if you look “exotic” and have small children.
