t least two people are dead after a massive sinkhole opened up on the sidewalk in the Sichuan city of Dazhou on Sunday afternoon, swallowing four passing pedestrians.
Surveillance footage shows the ground suddenly giving way beneath the unfortunate passersby as they were walking past a downtown bank in the rain. The initial hole measured out to an area of nearly two square meters.
Rescuers were dispatched but found the operation extremely difficult and dangerous. Another video shows the moment that the sinkhole collapsed further as two firefighters were working inside. The firefighters were just able to scramble up the sides of the hole in time to avoid being swallowed themselves.
The first collapse occurred at 2:28 pm on Sunday afternoon, but it wasn’t until after midnight that rescuers were able to pull out the first victim. The woman was later pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital.
At 9:36 am on Monday morning, a second victim was found, however, he was declared dead at the scene.
As of Tuesday morning, rescuers are still searching for the remaining two victims, an elderly man and his grandson. They have widened the search, using bulldozers to dig up large portions of the surrounding road.
