hile most children in China spent the Golden Week holiday having fun and relaxing, one 9-year-old from Chongqing spent it sorting through trash, searching for recyclables in order to earn enough money to pay back the 2,000 yuan that he stole from his grandmother.
The boy, named Hanghang, had secretly used his granny’s WeChat Pay account to make in-app mobile game purchases. When his parents found out, they decided to teach him a lesson about the value of 2,000 yuan, according to a report from Knews.
For the last two weeks, Hanghang has been spending his free time going around the neighborhood with his mother, collecting trash and sorting out recyclables like cardboard, newspapers, and bottles which he can turn in for money. He’s been getting better at the work, but still, it’s a tough gig. He says that it may take him a year to pay back the money, though he is determined to see it through to the end.
On Chinese social media, most netizens have cheered Hanghang’s parents for teaching their son a lesson that he will surely never forget. “If there were more parents like this, China wouldn’t have so many ‘little emperors,'” one Weibo user wrote, referring to the country’s latest generation of spoiled brats.
