hinese netizens are once again decrying the inaction of their compatriots after watching a viral video showing a foreign man intervening in a fight on the Shanghai subway.
The scuffle occurred last Wednesday on a Line 9 train that was stopped at Xujiahui Station. In the video, a man in a yellow shirt and a man in a black jacket are seen throwing wild punches at each other’s faces. The initial exchange causes the man in black to retreat back and trip out of the carriage. However, he’s soon back on his feet and the tussle continues inside the subway car.
While most commuters simply stand and watch the action, a foreigner standing near the door decides to do something. “Hey! Hey! Cut it out!” he shouts before grabbing the fist of one of the combatants, successfully stopping the fight with the help of another passenger who appears to be trying to get between the two.
“What the fuck is the matter with you guys?” the laowai shouts. Only at this point do several other commuters step in to separate the two men.
There is an infamous lack of good Samaritan spirit in Chinese society with passersby often more likely to reach for their camera phones than help a stranger in need, scared of falling victim to some kind of scam. This incident has given China’s “keyboard warriors” yet another chance to heap shame on their compatriots.
“This goes to show that the quality of our people is still too low compared with other countries,” wrote one Weibo user. “We lost face twice in front of a foreigner: first for starting a fight and then for not being able to stop it,” commented another netizen.
Still, not everyone is so concerned. “If I tried to stop every fight I came upon, I would end up in the hospital,” wrote another web user.
