woman in Shanghai has been fined for a traffic violation after taking part in an online trend meant to show off one’s wealth.
The Falling Stars Challenge started to become a thing on Instagram back in August. The idea is to post a photo of yourself lying face down as if you’ve just fallen… in the most extravagant way possible. Perhaps, you fell out of your private jet? Or maybe the fall caused you to spill out the contents of your designer handbag?
The challenge originated among the super-rich of Russia, but caught the attention of one young woman in Shanghai surnamed Yu who drove the wrong way down Shunchang Road last Friday afternoon, parking by the side of the road before having a man take a photo of her posing face down on the ground as if she had fallen out of her luxury car.
The scene was captured by a pedestrian who posted a photo online which came to the attention of the police. Yu was then summoned to a Shanghai police station. While she tried to argue that there was no traffic at the time and that she did not even realize that she had broken the law, police ended up fining her 200 yuan ($28) and deducting three points from her license.
Unsurprisingly, the Falling Star Challenge has recently taken off on Chinese social media — where it is literally called the “Flaunt Your Wealth Challenge” (炫富挑战). Here are a few of the more satirical images floating around:
