ooking for a travel destination for 2019? Well, according to Lonely Planet, you can’t do much better than the megacity of Shenzhen
The sleepy fishing village turned world’s top boomtown ranked second on the travel company’s list of the top 10 cities to visit next year — a fact that struck us as rather strange considering that we haven’t heard anyone rank Shenzhen as the second best place to visit in China, in Guangdong province, or in the Pearl River Delta, much less the world.
Lonely Planet justifies its pick by calling Shenzhen, “the Silicon Valley of China” — the Silicon Valley of the US, of course, known for being a major tourist destination — where new design openings and tech innovation abound, while also mentioning the city’s “strumming indie-music scene, cool cafes, a small contingent of craft brewers, and a whole new arts district risen from the remains of former warehouses.”
As nice as the openings of new museums, cafes, and art districts are, we don’t think this quite qualifies Shenzhen as a city that you must visit, especially considering that there’s now a new high-speed railway line that will take you directly to Hong Kong, without needing to hop out at the border.
In case you’re looking for other slightly dubious travel recommendations, here’s the rest of the top 10:
- Copenhagen, Denmark
- Shenzhen, China
- Novi Sad, Serbia
- Miami, USA
- Kathmandu, Nepal
- Mexico City, Mexico
- Dakar, Senegal
- Seattle, USA
- Zadar, Croatia
- Meknès, Morocco
