During his speech, Xi promised to lower import tariffs and further improve access to the Chinese market for international companies, without actually citing many specifics. He also took several thinly-veiled jabs at Trump’s trade wars and protectionistic policies.
“All countries should be committed to opening up and oppose protectionism and unilateralism in a clear-cut stand,” Xi said before getting metaphorical.
“As globalization deepens, the practices of the law of the jungle and winner-take-all are dead ends… The Chinese economy is not a pond, but an ocean. Strong winds and storms may upset a pond, but never an ocean.”

Xi’s speech comes shortly after a reportedly very amicable phone call with Trump, but provided no sign of a cooling in the trade war between the world’s two largest economies. The two leaders are set to meet at the end of this month on the sidelines of a G20 meeting in Argentina. This year, the US has levied new tariffs on $250 billion of Chinese imports.
The first China International Import Expo will continue to the end of this week, clogging up traffic in Shanghai and dominating Chinese state media reports. About 5,000 producers from more than 130 countries around the world are expected to attend the event.
