veryone loves the new restaurant smell, but there are advantages going back to long-established ones. They’re familiar, the service is reliable, and there isn’t a line to get in. Additionally, some of them have introduced new items on their menu to keep diners excited. We check out the new food at one-Michelin-star Phénix, modern Asian bistro Ginger, and American bar and restaurant Urban Diner Gastropub.
Phénix eatery & bar
Phénix is an upscale French bistro inside The Puli hotel whose a la carte menu has won a Michelin Star since opening in 2016. They introduced their first tasting menu last month, and it showcases chef Michael Wilson’s commitment to seasonal ingredients. The meal kicks off with an array of amuse-bouches such as caviar and Burgundian snails, followed by a soup, foie gras, a salad, and a Middle Eastern-inspired lamb. Then, a sorbet readies your palate for a pandan rice pudding dessert. The tasting menu costs ¥688 per person, and you can complement it with a wine pairing for ¥398 more.

Ginger Modern Asian Bistro
Ginger has been at its Xinguo Road location for six years, and the restaurant is going strong with its healthy interpretation of Southeast Asian cuisine. The food is cooked without MSG, the vegetables contain no chemical pesticides, and the meat is hormone and antibiotic free. What the dishes have, however, are heaps of flavor, such as the new snow crab curry, which is rich and complex, or the hot and sour clams in a broth of chili and coriander that will kick winter’s ass.

Urban Diner Gastropub
Urban Diner Gastropub started off as a restaurant in Joy City, the mall with a ferris wheel in Hongkou District, before moving to Shaanxi Bei Road earlier this year. They refined their menu by taking bits from the first edition – created by chefs Sean Jorgensen and Anna Bautista of Highline – and combining it with ideas from their current chef. Some new items include the corned beef brisket rueben, served with tangy sauerkraut and sweet potato fries, but the winners are the chicken dishes, from the incredibly juicy Beyond Fingerlickin Roasted Chicken to the Cowboy Wings, coated with luscious chipotle buffalo sauce and dunked in a funky bleu cheese dip.
