ong known for its robotic broadcasters, China’s official Xinhua news agency has taken the next logical step by introducing “AI anchors.“
The two digital anchors — one English-speaking and one Mandarin-speaking — are composites of real human hosts. While reading the news in a robotic voice, they move their mouth and face in a fairly realistic fashion.
They were created with help by Chinese search engine company Sogou. Xinhua boasts that the anchors can work 24 hours a day, “reducing news production costs and improving efficiency.”
Below, you can watch some footage of the English-language AI anchor in action. Here, he introduces himself as being based on a real anchor named Zhang Zhao. Watch your back, Zhang.
And here he talks about what else but the China International Import Expo:
While the chances were already low, the introduction of digital anchors does reduce the chance of a propaganda-reading host going rogue, at least until Skynet takes over.
