In an awards ceremony that was heavy with local winners, Shanghai restaurant and cocktail bar Sober Company came out on top as they took home the most prizes at the Drink Magazine Bar Awards yesterday.
The multi-concept venue on Nandang Road swept the categories for best service, restaurant bar, and bar team at the third annual prize-giving event for China’s bar industry, held this year at Jing An Shangri-La hotel.
Owned by prolific Japanese bartender Shingo Gokan, Sober Company consists of a cafe and aperitif bar on the first floor, while upstairs is their restaurant serving New York-inspired Chinese food and a separate cocktail bar dishing out more complex drinks. Sober Company was also recognized by this year’s World’s 50 Best Bars list.
Other Shanghai bars that won include Atelier by Taste Buds for their design, Shake for their music program, Le Verre à Vin for their wine list, and Le Baron as the best High Volume Bar.
The top awards, however, went to Guangzhou speakeasy Hope & Sesame, which was feted for their cocktail program and as the bar of the year for 2018.
