In the wake of Dolce & Gabbana canceling its big Shanghai show following an extremely ill-conceived ad campaign, a hilarious parody of the brand’s offensive video advertisements has hit Chinese social media.
Whereas D&G’s videos saw an Asian woman trying to eat a pizza, a large cannoli, and spaghetti with chopsticks, these clips see a foreign guy attempting to consume baozi, a bowl of snow fungus soup, and some Chinese beef noodles with a fork and knife.
The spoof was produced by fashion blogger SerenaHottie with American author Nathan Rich in the starring role. While it had been going viral, the video now appears to have disappeared from the Chinese net for reasons unknown.
Dolce & Gabbana’s ads have been the talk of the Chinese internet this week with the Italian fashion house managing to piss off an entire nation of potential customers. Things only got worse for the company today when an Instagram user shared screenshots of a back-and-forth he says he had with co-founder Stefano Gabbana.
In the conversation, Gabbana writes things like “China Ignorant Dirty Smelling Mafia.” He has since claimed that the comments were not his and that his Instagram account had been hacked.
A number of Chinese celebrities and models publicly pulled out of the fashion show and a “Boycott Dolce” hashtag was launched on Weibo, eventually resulting in the brand announcing that its “The Great Show” would be “rescheduled” for a later date.
