orrific surveillance footage has hit the Chinese internet showing a little girl being run over and killed while walking across a crosswalk alongside her mother, hand in hand.
The incident occurred on the evening of December 1st in Shenzhen’s Bao’an District. In the footage, the mother is seen walking swiftly across the street with her daughter by her side. Once on the road, the mom turns her head and notices a car coming straight towards them.
She puts out a hand to signal for the driver to stop, however, the driver fails to stop and instead runs over her daughter, only coming to a halt after the little girl had been crushed by the front tires. The mother then collapses to the ground in grief. Tragically, her daughter did not survive the crash.
After an initial investigation, Shenzhen police said that the driver, surnamed Zhang, was not paying attention to the road and was responsible for the crash. It’s not yet clear what sort of punishment the driver will face, but, on Weibo, Chinese netizens are calling for the driver to be charged with intentional homicide.
Meanwhile, others have argued that while the driver is primarily to blame, the mother is also at fault for her own carelessness, having crossed the road with her daughter without first checking that it was safe.
