Chinese food delivery giant Meituan is facing some rather bad publicity after video went viral over the weekend of a father beating his daughter with a broom while wearing a company shirt.
In the nearly four-minute-long video compilation, the man and his wife are seen taking turns abusing their 8-year-old daughter, slapping her in the face, throwing her to the floor, kicking her on the ground, and spanking her with a broom.
The video, which has since been wiped from Weibo, was viewed tens of millions of times over the weekend, becoming a top trending topic, igniting outrage across the country, and casting the spotlight on Meituan. The company was able to provide information to Shenzhen police which has resulted in an investigation being launched.
Police in the city interviewed the couple who admitted to abusing their daughter. A personal protection order has been filed on behalf of the child. She will also receive psychological counseling. Fortunately, medical examiners did not find that she was suffering from any injuries.
Meanwhile, Meituan has released a statement confirming that the father worked as one of its delivery drivers from August 28th until December 6th of this year. It’s not clear why he left the company. The videos were recorded in September and October.
