end up in the hospital on what was supposed to be his wedding day.man in the Guizhou city of Zunyi is now suing his friends after their hazing and harassment caused him to
On November 25th, 24-year-old Ai Guangtao was pelted with eggs, doused with alcohol, and sprayed with ink before then being stripped of his clothes, taped to a utility pole, and beaten with bamboo. This bit of festive torture was carried out by the man’s friends, engaging in the infamous Chinese tradition of “wedding hazing.”
In order to escape from his well-wishers, Ai hopped a fence and ran onto a busy highway where he was struck by a passing vehicle, ending up lying on the road nearly naked and badly injured. Villagers quickly called for an ambulance which rushed Ai to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a skull fracture and brain hemorrhage.
The wedding was called off and Ai spent the next two weeks in the hospital. To make matters worse, police determined that Ai was to blame for the accident, meaning that he was responsible for the damage done to the car. The driver’s insurance company demanded 30,000 yuan ($4,370) from Ai, according to a report from The Paper.
In order to pay for these damages, Ai has decided to hire a lawyer and sue his friends for the amount.
While reports of extreme “wedding pranks” have come in from cities around China, the city of Zunyi appears to be an especially bad place to get hitched. Last March, a court in Zunyi ordered three men to pay 90,000 yuan ($13,100) to a friend after they accidentally broke his face on his wedding day.
