ou’re bound to come across either a xiaolongbao or huntun restaurant on almost every street in Shanghai, but Malgorzata ‘Gosia’ Modlinska and Joanna Boczek are proving there’s room for a different kind of stuffed dough with the latest iteration of Pierogi Ladies, where they’re serving Polish-style dumplings along with a variety of Central and Eastern European dishes.
It’s the second brick and mortar coming of the Polish eatery, which began in 2016 as a pop up event followed by several temporary locations before bunking down at this spot on Jiaozhou Road.
Pierogi are native to Central Europe and found in Slavic, Hungarian, and Baltic cuisines. The dough is typically made from flour and water, and traditional stuffings can either be savory or sweet. You’ll find both styles at Pierogi Ladies, which rolls out their own dough made from imported flour and fills them with classic flavors such as potato, fried, onion, and cottage cheese, or sauerkraut and forest sausage. Additionally, they have house styles like a black dough version with blood sausage and pickles called the Bloody Pierogi, the Malibu Pierogi (chocolate dough with mascarpone, Malibu rum, and coconut), and many more, with a new item every month.
Besides pierogi, there are also boards of cold cuts and pickles, main dishes such as a traditional blood sausage dish called kaszanka, the Bigos – Hunter’s Stew made from tomato, cabbage, sauerkraut, pork, plum, and mushroom, and their hangover kit, a hearty, revitalizing plate of sausage, eggs, sauerkraut pierogi, a vodka shot, and pickle juice.
Drinks also feature heavily at Pierogi Ladies. There’s a Polish lager as well as both classic and signature cocktails, but vodka shots are what you should knock back here. The restaurant infuses Polish vodka brands with their own flavors, and you get options such as the Monte (hazelnut and milk), Chupa Chups, (lemon and ginger), Vibovit (raspberry and orange), and Apple Pie (bison grass vodka and apple juice).
