wenty students were injured on Tuesday morning in an attack at a Beijing primary school that was carried out by a former worker.
The attack occurred at around 11:17 am at the Beijing No. 1 Affiliated Elementary School of Xuanwu Normal School in the capital’s Xicheng district. Instead of using a knife, the attacker is reported to have used a hammer to strike the kids.
All 20 of the injured children were rushed to the hospital for treatment. Local police said that three of the students were seriously injured but were not in life-threatening condition.
In a statement, Xicheng district police announced that they had captured the attacker at the scene. He is identified as a 49-year-old migrant worker from Heilongjiang province surnamed Jia who used to work as a repairman at the school but had recently been let go at the end of last year. It’s suspected that his anger at being terminated led to the attack.
Video has leaked onto Chinese social media of school administrators attempting to explain details of the attack to a group of concerned parents. In the clip, the head teacher confirms that the attack was carried out by a former employee and occurred on the school’s first floor in a number of different second grade classrooms.
Unfortunately, vicious attacks like these involving schoolchildren are nothing new in China. In the early part on this decade, there was an extremely troubling string of incidents involving men bursting into schools and hacking down as many children as they could.
With tight restrictions on guns in China, assailants were forced to use knives or cleavers to carry out their massacres. The government pinned the blame of these attacks on those with mental health problems looking for easy targets.
While the number of these kinds of school stabbings has certainly decreased in recent years, they still do happen from time to time. Last April, a 28-year-old man killed nine kids and injured 10 more in a knife attack near a middle school in Shaanxi province. The man said that he carried out the attack because he had been bullied at the same school a decade ago. He was executed in September.
In June, a man stabbed two kids to death outside of a primary school in Shanghai. Police said that the man carried out the gruesome attack as a way of taking revenge on society.” Most recently, in October, 14 children were injured after a woman went on a stabbing spree on the grounds of a Chongqing kindergarten.
