Evidently, Peppa the Pig’s brilliant branding campaign in China has been so successful that even the People’s Liberation Army is using the cartoon character to represent the upcoming Year of the Pig. In video posted onto Weibo by the PLA garrison in Hong Kong, around 100 soldiers are seen wishing everyone a happy Chinese New Year while arranged into the shape of Peppa’s face.
It’s quite the official image reversal from last year when Peppa got into a bit of trouble in China after becoming a counterculture icon. The popular short video Tik Tok had even gone so far as to ban the popular children’s cartoon character after fans spawned countless memes and parodies, often of a dark, graphic, or sexually suggestive nature.
However, Peppa is now more popular than ever in the Middle Kingdom. On Tuesday, the first day of the Year of the Pig, Peppa Pig Celebrates Chinese New Year, will hit theaters across the country where it’s expected to bring home the bacon, particularly following the release of the most successful promotional video in memory.
