n a landmark moment for gender equality, China’s official Xinhua news agency has introduced the world’s first female AI anchor. Her name is Xin Xiaomeng.
Long known for its robotic broadcasters, Xinhua introduced the first two AI news anchors that the world has seen last November. Both of whom are men, one English-speaking and the other Mandarin-speaking.
They were created with help from Chinese search engine giant Sogou. At the time, Xinhua boasted that the anchors could work 24 hours a day, “reducing news production costs and improving efficiency.”
Below you can watch Xin introduce herself. Appropriately enough, she will be tasked with reading out news reports about the upcoming annual parliamentary sessions in Beijing, which typically aren’t exactly known for their excitement.
Meanwhile, other advances in AI technology have evidently allowed these AI anchors to stand up while reading the news. Brave new world, indeed.
