Based on a novella of the same name by Hugo-winning author Liu Cixin, the film has taken in $620 million at the Chinese box office, making it the highest grossing movie anywhere so far this year.
It’s not clear how much Netflix paid for the film’s international streaming rights, though the company reportedly plans to translate the movie into 29 different languages.
Netflix operates pretty much everywhere in the world except for China, where it is barred by government regulations that feature homegrown streaming services, however, that hasn’t stopped it from trying to appeal to Chinese audiences outside of the Middle Kingdom.
For instance, the highest-grossing movie in Chinese history, 2017’s action-blockbuster Wolf Warrior 2, is also available to watch on Netflix. Meanwhile, the company is set to release its first original Mandarin-language series sometime this year.
