xperience the famous surrealist spots and optical illusions of Yayoi Kusama at this exhibition in Shanghai starting in March, which are so popular they once spawned fake shows in China.
On display at the new Fosun Foundation gallery from March 7 to June 9, Kusama, who’s regarded as one of the most popular living artists today, will be bringing her works including paintings, sculptures, and reflective installations.
Born in 1929 in Nagano prefecture, Japan, Kusama is known for her abstract forms and polka dot patterns, which she’s covered on everything from trees to human performers. She gained international prominence after moving to the US in the 1950s and became part of the avant-garde art movement in New York during the 1960s, where she also used her works to stage protests again the Vietnam war.
Kusama returned to Japan in 1973 where she wrote a number of novels, one of which won a literary award, and her biography was published in 2003. Her art has also crossed over into fashion, film, and performances. Kusama continues to create her art from her home country till today and has exhibited prolifically at shows around the world.
Not all shows are real, however. Last year, the Kusama Foundation declared a series of joint exhibitions around China of works from her and Takashi Murakami, another Japanese artist, as unauthorized and forged.
At her official Shanghai exhibit in March, titled “All About Love Speaks Forever,” Kusama will be showing 40 works both inside and outside the building, including paintings from her latest series “My Eternal Soul,” the “Infinity Mirror Room,” and a few large-scale reflective installations. Some of the art has been specially created for this exhibition.
Early bird prices are now available at ¥75 until March 6, then goes up to ¥150 for a regular ticket. Head to Fosun Foundation’s website to get yours.
