n Friday evening, 26 people were killed and 28 more injured after a tourist bus suddenly caught fire in Hunan province.
The 59-seat bus was carrying 56 people — 53 passengers, two drivers, and a tour guide — to Mao Zedong’s birthplace of Shaoshan when it ignited into flames on a highway in Hanshou county, according to China’s official Xinhua news agency. The blaze was apparently so sudden that many people were unable to escape.
The cause of the fire has not yet been reported. Both drivers have detained and an investigation is underway.
The incident is yet another grisly reminder of shaky safety standards in China where at least 78 people were also killed last week in a chemical factory explosion in Jiangsu province.
