Jeju Izkaya’s three chefs, Tom Ryu, Dean Kim, and Shin Lee, wanted their food to be more accessible to people in town while making dishes they themselves would order for delivery. “We want to make something that’s tasty and easy to enjoy as one whole meal, something that we crave from delivery food,” Ryu said.
For the collaboration, Jeju Izakaya came up with three dishes that reflect their modern approach to Korean food while remaining deeply traditional. Here’s a highlight.
Red hot tteok-bokki with cheese rice (¥42)
Tteok-bokki is stir fried spicy rice cake. It’s a common, widely loved snack that brings back childhood memories for many Koreans. According to Ryu, it’s a simple dish that’s extremely difficult to get right, which is why he can’t find good tteok-bokki outside Korea. For his version, Ryu didn’t tame down the spiciness level but topped it with cheese, which adds a creamy balance. The dish can be ordered as a meal or as a snack to share.
Spicy kimchi fried rice with pork BBQ short ribs (¥45)
This is probably the least spicy dish among three, but there’s still a subtle kick to it. The flame-grilled pork and sauteed cabbage add smoothness to the taste, making it an enjoyable and filling meal. It’s a premium home-style dish that tastes the same as it does in a restaurant in Korea as well as in a box delivered to your door.
Fiery oyako-don (¥43)
This chicken dish isn’t kidding when it calls itself fiery: it’s marinated in chili and other spices for a devilish jolt. But the meat has an enjoyable sweetness to it, and creamy egg soothes any lingering burn. A thrilling yet comforting dish that works as a generous single meal.
