ields China, one of the first online supermarkets catering to high end consumers and foreigners in mainland China, has ceased operation on April 19 after a decade in business.
In a notice on their website, the platform announced they were closing “in consideration of the overall development strategy and business layout of [their owner] Sun Art Retail Group.”
Sun Art Retail Group is China’s largest offline hypermarket operator with brands such as RT-Mart and Auchan. They acquired Fields in 2015 and teamed up with internet giant Alibaba in 2017 to speed up their overall digital sales. In March this year, Sun Art announced a plan to open 25 new retail stores this year.
Those plans, unfortunately, do not include Fields, and the e-commerce website said they are stopping orders and delivery from April 19. Any unused credit, gift cards, and unfulfilled orders will be fully refunded.
The company added all Fields employees are being treated fairly.
For expats who shop for their groceries online, there’s still Kate & Kimi, Grandmarket, and Biofarm, as well as Chinese sites like Tmall, JD.com, and Yihaodian.
