hile Mao Zedong’s communist revolution may be credited with finally wiping out opium use in China, these days the former Chinese leader’s continued appeal makes for some nice hiding places for drug smugglers.
On Monday, police in Hong Kong carried out a raid on a flat in the New Territories after seizing one man outside of the apartment and finding 14 grams of methamphetamine on him. The subsequent raid turned up a baggie containing 10 more grams of meth which was concealed inside of a bust of the Great Helmsman.
The total value of the haul is estimated at HK$13,200 ($1,680). In a later raid at another flat in the area, police added dramatically to that total, seizing 1.2 kilograms of heroin with an estimated market value of HK$1 million ($127,000).
