hina’s education system has taken its most extreme step yet against smartphones, banning them from college classrooms in Jiangxi province.
On Tuesday, the province’s education department issued a notice that included a ban on undergraduates taking smartphones or tablet computers into a university classroom unless the device is required by the course.
Over the years, a number of primary, middle, and high schools around China have taken some drastic measures against smartphones in the classroom, including forcing students to smash their own phones with a hammer if caught with them out in school. However, this is the most severe effort yet at the university level.
As you might expect, the move was not applauded by Chinese net users on Weibo. “But tablets are very convenient for taking notes and there’s no need to bring textbooks,” reasoned one. “Can adults have their mobile phones taken away?” wondered another. “Are you going to conduct body searches?” asked one more.
