hanghai’s new coronavirus screening procedures at the airport have nabbed two imported cases of the virus before they could go out into the public.
The two travelers, both Chinese nationals from Fujian province, arrived at the Pudong airport following a flight from Bologna, Italy, with a stopover in Moscow.
They both showed Covid-19 symptoms upon arrival and were transferred to a hospital for observation. They were confirmed to be infected on Tuesday morning.
Health authorities are now seeking out people who came in close contact with the two patients. So far, 19 contacts have been put into quarantine.
All those arriving in Shanghai from countries badly hit by the coronavirus must now go under quarantine for 14 days.
This and other policies have come into effect as China has shifted its focus from coronavirus cases inside the country to those arriving from abroad.
Last week, at least eight Chinese nationals landed at the Pudong airport from Italy and passed through coronavirus screening before arriving back at their home county in Zhejiang province and testing positive for the virus.
As you might expect, all these new procedures have significantly lengthened waiting times at the airport with one Chinese passenger recently coughing on a Thai Airways flight attendant in an attempt to get cabin crew to open the door after being cooped up on the plane for seven hours.
