Shanghaiist is looking for interns with an interest in journalism, new media and blogging. They should possess good people skills and have a talent for producing crisp, concise copy.
Interns will be expected to possess a wide variety of interests, as Shanghaiist covers a wide spectrum of life in Shanghai/China, including: arts, culture, sports, music, food, parties, events, business, human rights, politics, environment, LGBT issues, religion, technology, etc.
Someone well-versed in the Shanghai scene who would be willing to cover events around the city is a plus!
Qualifications:
- Basic reporting experience
- Experience in writing and maintaining a blog
- Familiarity with or willingness to learn the workings of the Movable Type blog software
- Familiarity with or willingness to learn basic HTML
- Familiarity with or willingness to operate Adobe Photoshop, or some other picture editing software
- Good aesthetic sense
- An excellent command of grammar, spelling, punctuation and style
- Extremely detail oriented, organized, able to work under deadlines
- Proficiency in Mandarin, though not required, will be a plus
Basic responsibilities include fact-checking, copy-editing of stories submitted by our team of freelance contributors, researching on the internet and pitching story ideas.
Shanghaiist interns walk away with gained understanding of all aspects of online publishing, from the daily news cycle to reader interactivity.
Interns willing to work full-time may be paid a small honorarium. Part-time interns should be available to work at least 2 days a week. Internships last 3 months.

The Video Storyteller will be responsible for creating a compelling editorial experience for all of Shanghaiist’s video productions, ensuring that they meet the aims of Shanghaiist’s wider content strategy, and are of a quality worthy of Shanghaiist.

Duties and responsibilities
To create the most interesting, share-worthy and entertaining video content through a uniquely Shanghaiist lens
- Generate ideas for video stories and see them through to fruition
- Collaborate closely with videographer to create the most interesting, fun-to-watch videos
- Complete high-volume asset delivery in crafting and curating content
- Work with the sales and marketing teams to maintain and develop strongly external working relationships
- Ensure all video content is well optimized
Qualifications
- Editorial experience in news or lifestyle reporting with established outlets
- Ability to work in a fast-paced (often chaotic) web production environment
- Excellent English writing, interviewing and copy-editing skills
- Sharp eye for visual news elements and video storytelling
- Demonstrable track record of producing content that engages users and grows audience

- Strong knowledge of Shanghai with a desire to constantly be uncovering the latest and greatest things happening in the city

This is a full-time position, and a minimum of 2 years of editorial and media sales experience is required.
Duties and responsibilities
Generate revenue by consistently meeting and exceeding monthly sales targets
- Develop new business and manage sales cycles from start to finish
- Maintain an active schedule of face-to-face appointments and prospecting calls
- Develop and maintain strong C-level client relationships
- Complete high-volume asset delivery in crafting and curating content
- Generate story ideas and integrated content campaigns that meet the marketing needs of clients
- Create the most interesting, share-worthy and entertaining video content through a uniquely Shanghaiist lens
- Manage an entire portfolio of social media accounts
- Work closely with the sales and marketing team to ensure all digital content is well optimized
- Work with the sales and marketing teams to maintain and develop strongly external working relationships
Qualifications
- Top producer with strong consultative selling skills
- Experience in a fast-paced (often chaotic) web production environment
- Proven ability to work with the tools of the trade – HTML, content management systems, photo/video editing, and the WeChat backend system
- Excellent writing, interviewing, copy-editing, fact-checking and planning skills
- Advanced knowledge of spelling, grammar, punctuation and use of style manuals
- Attention to detail and ability to commit minimal errors on proofreading tasks
- Demonstrable track record of producing content that engages users and grows audience
- Proven ability to work effectively with editorial, and sales/marketing teams
- Strong knowledge of Shanghai with a desire to constantly be uncovering the latest and greatest things happening in the city
